The story weaves together group therapist Mariana’s life with her late husband and a murder investigation at Cambridge - where she and her husband met and where her niece, Zoe, now attends! The writing was good and the plot had promise, but parts of the story seemed a little bit cliché and just unbelievable。 Not a bad thriller, just not my favorite。 I didn’t guess the killer early on like with most thrillers, so the twist at the end was a bit jaw-dropping。 Definitely worth the read if you enjoy t The story weaves together group therapist Mariana’s life with her late husband and a murder investigation at Cambridge - where she and her husband met and where her niece, Zoe, now attends! The writing was good and the plot had promise, but parts of the story seemed a little bit cliché and just unbelievable。 Not a bad thriller, just not my favorite。 I didn’t guess the killer early on like with most thrillers, so the twist at the end was a bit jaw-dropping。 Definitely worth the read if you enjoy this genre!Thank you to the publisher for the advance reading copy! Dark Academia + Cambridge + Greek MythologyIt should be a 5stars reading but I discovered the killer too early and the beginning was so slow that that I was about to give up。 But anyway, highly addictive and entertaining。

In some ways, this was even more satisfying and compelling than The Silent Patient。 The Maidens has more substance, is more meaty, and explores the psychological aspect more in depth。 Just like Alex’s previous book, it contains that signature double twist moment that catches you completely off guard and makes you look back at previous chapter and re-examine what you thought you knew about the killer。 There are so many red herrings scattered throughout, it is nearly impossible to see through the In some ways, this was even more satisfying and compelling than The Silent Patient。 The Maidens has more substance, is more meaty, and explores the psychological aspect more in depth。 Just like Alex’s previous book, it contains that signature double twist moment that catches you completely off guard and makes you look back at previous chapter and re-examine what you thought you knew about the killer。 There are so many red herrings scattered throughout, it is nearly impossible to see through the deceptions。 All in all, this was perfectly entertaining and captivating。 And aside from the clever murder mystery, I also really enjoyed the look at the origins of a serial killer。 。。。more

I enjoyed the overall story and the mystery/thriller behind it。 However, it was a little too technical for me with the Greek mythology/history and there were still some loose ends for me, especially with Fred。 I liked how it referenced The Silent Patient and gave a little insight into how that therapist got to be there。 Another twisty thriller with an end I did not see coming。

3。5 stars for this dark suspense with a shocking twist but disjointed storytelling。 I enjoyed The Silent Patient, the author’s first book, and I sure do love a mind bending twist, but I was disappointed with this new thriller。 SYNOPSISMariana is a group therapist mourning her husband’s recent death until a murder at her niece’s elite college brings her there to comfort Zoe, who is almost like a daughter to her。 She finds herself investigating on her own and lands right in the middle of a Greek m 3。5 stars for this dark suspense with a shocking twist but disjointed storytelling。 I enjoyed The Silent Patient, the author’s first book, and I sure do love a mind bending twist, but I was disappointed with this new thriller。 SYNOPSISMariana is a group therapist mourning her husband’s recent death until a murder at her niece’s elite college brings her there to comfort Zoe, who is almost like a daughter to her。 She finds herself investigating on her own and lands right in the middle of a Greek mythology-based killing spree。 THOUGHTSI had a lot of trouble with this book。 It was a pretty entertaining and very fast read, but compared to the author’s previous book, the writing was very clunky and a bit dramatic。 There seemed to be some characters thrown in quickly and then left to fizzle out for the sake of possibly presenting multiple suspects? It felt a bit unrealistic at times (not that I need my thrillers to be realistic!) - the relationships and situations were strange and didn’t feel fully fleshed out。 There are some fun nods to The Silent Patient and definitely a WTF moment at the end, but the writing itself may throw you for a loop。 Thank you to NetGalley and Celadon Books for the advanced e-copy! 。。。more

The Maidens was a compelling listen mainly due to the excellent narration by Louise Brealey。 It is a dark-academia crime novel with strong influences of greek tragedy and myth。 There are echoes of The Secret History primarily in its university setting, a small elite, over-privileged group of students under the tutelage of a mysterious and charming professor, with plenty of cult-like vibes。 However, this is much more a crime thriller than a literary slow burn novel and I was fully aware of that g The Maidens was a compelling listen mainly due to the excellent narration by Louise Brealey。 It is a dark-academia crime novel with strong influences of greek tragedy and myth。 There are echoes of The Secret History primarily in its university setting, a small elite, over-privileged group of students under the tutelage of a mysterious and charming professor, with plenty of cult-like vibes。 However, this is much more a crime thriller than a literary slow burn novel and I was fully aware of that going in。 Listening to crime thrillers on audio might be a new kind of escapism that I’m enjoying at the minute。The plot of The Maidens is hyperbolic and ridiculous at times。 Our main protagonist Marianna, plagued by tragedies and deaths of close family members heads to Cambridge to support her sole close family member, her niece Zoey when a violent murder occurs in campus。 Professionally, Marianne is a group psychotherapist and she involves herself in unofficially investigating this crime。 It seemed a little ridiculous that the police’s role in this high-profile crime seems almost perfunctory and hardly there, whilst our protagonist with no real connection or authority finds herself knee-deep in investigations。 But if you overlook that slightly absurd setup, it is an engaging listen particularly elevated by the audiobook。I did end up walking for longer or making up chores at home just to continue listening。 By the last few pages, I did manage to see the twist coming which didn’t necessarily reduce the enjoyment。 But I do remember thinking, that it would be pretty far-fetched if it headed in that particular direction and it did。 Perhaps that’s the whole point of thrillers in that it's meant to shock the reader at the risk of almost being unrealistic。 But yea, nonetheless I would recommend the audiobook if you’re looking for one that would completely pull you in。 Provided, you’re willing to turn a blind eye to some of the unrealistic arcs it takes。 。。。more
